The room & gardens
Aman Kyoto won me over before breakfast. The paths wind past moss and stone, and my room looked into the trees rather than over another city street. I liked how the wood and stone gave it a spare feel, while power shades, USB sockets and a Toto toilet made it easy to settle in. This is the sort of room where the garden view matters more than an extra piece of furniture.
The hot spring
The outdoor hot spring was the highlight of a slow afternoon. Its shared bathing areas are separate, so private time together needs arranging ahead. I spent longer walking the gardens than expected and was glad not to have packed every hour with Kyoto sightseeing. The city center takes a journey; that distance feels like a pleasure only when there is time to enjoy the property.
Breakfast & dinner
Breakfast in the Living Room, beside the fireplace or outside, suited the quiet mood. Dinner required more thought. I wanted one of the limited Japanese omakase seats, but getting the full price, including drinks, clear before booking would spare an awkward surprise afterward. A car and dinner table are worth sorting out at the same time as the room.
Would I return?
The forest, hot spring and unhurried mornings are reason enough to come back. Anyone planning several tightly scheduled dinners in central Kyoto might find the setting inconvenient. For a stay built around the gardens, the distance is exactly the point.
