MY STAY
The Kamogawa room
The Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto gave me a quiet place beside the Kamogawa while keeping the city's older lanes close. My room's river outlook made sitting with tea tempting after a walk. A terrace or corner suite facing the water offered a different routine from a courtyard room, so I paid attention to the view rather than hope for an upgrade.

Japanese breakfast
The Japanese breakfast arrived in lacquerware boxes filled with seasonal small dishes and warm fish. That stayed in my mind longer than a large anonymous buffet. I could take a bicycle out beyond the usual temple circuit and return to the stone-lined indoor pool for a quieter hour.

Design & concierge
The design felt restrained, which suited the river setting. Concierge help was useful for a difficult dinner table, but Kyoto's small restaurants deserved asking about ahead of time. I liked having enough unscheduled room in the day to come back, watch the light change on the river and enjoy the hotel as well as the city.

Would I return?
The river-facing room and easy access to older Kyoto lanes make the hotel's calm worth returning for over several unhurried days. The right river view and a few plans settled beforehand made an active Kyoto trip feel easier.
