Quiet in Waikiki
Halekulani made Waikiki feel slower without taking Honolulu away. I could step into busy streets and come back to gardens, the pool and a lanai where a Diamond Head view made staying in tempting. A vague glimpse of water between buildings would have been a very different room.
Breakfast & sunset
Breakfast at House Without a Key began with the ocean in sight. Later, a mai tai beneath its old kiawe tree and live hula at sunset gave me a reason to return to the same spot. Fruit and Champagne brought up to the lanai made the room feel like somewhere to spend an afternoon, not merely leave a bag.
Concierge service
Service helped beyond the property too. When a Diamond Head hike booking fell through, the concierge found another reservation rather than just offering sympathy. I could swim on returning and settle in for a dinner at La Mer, which was worth reserving ahead.
Would I return?
Halekulani suits a Honolulu visit that leaves room for breakfast by the sea and a quiet return from Waikiki. Another Waikiki room could put me by the same beach; it might not provide this sort of quiet on returning. The view, pool and slow meal mattered more than packing the days with sightseeing.
