MY STAY
Old New York & the room
The Carlyle gave me a version of New York that a new glass hotel could not copy. An elevator attendant took me upstairs, and live jazz at Bemelmans Bar made coming back in the evening appealing. Staff found a table without a long wait. The quieter Upper East Side address suited the mood.

Room layouts
The room mattered more than the legend. A smaller category could feel tight, particularly when there was little closet space for several nights. I looked beyond photographs of the grand suites and considered where clothes and bags would actually go. An elegant room is less restful when suitcases must remain in the way.
Breakfast & housekeeping
Room-service breakfast and housekeeping that refreshed the room almost invisibly made the days easy. Public-facing service was less consistent: being refused help with one last piece of luggage on returning upstairs felt strange after so much care elsewhere. I wanted the ordinary requests handled as well as the bar's atmosphere, especially after a long day out in New York.
Would I return?
The jazz at Bemelmans and a properly chosen bedroom would draw me back to The Carlyle. The hotel's long service tradition was lovely when it appeared in everyday help, not just in a story about its history.
