The Kapalua setting
Kapalua felt greener and calmer than the Maui resort areas I knew farther south. At the Ritz-Carlton, I could take a guided walk along the coast, return for a swim and finish with music in the lobby bar. A spacious suite gave me somewhere comfortable to spend the rest of a quieter evening; this was a place to settle into rather than rush through.
Beach access & charges
The beach needed more planning than the photograph suggested. A chair and umbrella have carried an extra charge around $60 a day before tip, and the surf is not always as gentle as it looks from above. I checked the current terms instead of assuming the sand was an all-inclusive extension of the pool.
Bar & breakfast
A burger in the lobby bar with a drink as live music started was a meal worth repeating. Buffet breakfast was less straightforward when seating ended earlier than a desk answer had suggested. With few outside restaurants a short walk away, knowing where and when to eat mattered.
Would I return?
Kapalua's coastal trails and time for golf or spa would bring me back ahead of any promise of beach service. The greener coastline and more relaxed mood were the hotel's best arguments, especially with enough time to enjoy them.
